POSITION TITLE: DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL SAFETY

DEPARTMENT: NON-BARGAINING

REPORTS TO: HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTOR

SUMMARY: The Director of School Safety oversees all of the safety related issues throughout the district including: development of district and school safety plans, engagement with school staff to facilitate crisis management, liaising with the Bristol Police Department and other law enforcement agencies, communicates with administrators, teachers, students and families regarding school safety issues and manages the data related to school safety.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.

* Exhibit a personality that demonstrates interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community

* Form positive working relationships with the SRO's and other police staff

* Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character

* Assist administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations

* Serve as the school district's liaison to the Bristol Police Department, the Juvenile Justice System, DCF, and other related agencies

* Coordinate the schools' participation in emergency preparedness drills

* Establish and maintain a district Safety program, including:

* Appropriate lighting and signage

* Building safety systems

* Building surveillance systems

* Visitor registration and identification procedures

* Emergency plans for evacuations, lock downs, and other crises

* Assists with fire drills and other emergency building evacuations

* Maintains security records, safety drills, logs and reports

* In collaboration with the Director of Human Resources, provide training for district staff in child abuse warning signs, child abuse referrals to DCF and other areas as required by State Statute

* Prepare and administer the budget for district safety to ensure the most cost-effective utilization of resources

* Coordinate district collaborative efforts with municipal agencies for accident investigations and law enforcement

* Recommend policies, procedures and contract language to improve discipline and safety

* Serve as a role model for students and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire and grooming, and an effective work ethic

* Participate in appropriate in-service and workshop programs and attend any required meetings

* Protect confidentiality of records and information about students and staff, and use discretion when sharing any such information.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws including, the direct and indirect supervision of all employees.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: TO PERFORM THIS JOB SUCCESSFULLY, AN INDIVIDUAL MUST BE ABLE TO PERFORM EACH ESSENTIAL DUTY SATISFACTORILY. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS:

* Bachelor's Degree in a related field

* Prior experience in law enforcement

* Background check and fingerprinting is required

* Hold and maintain a valid driver's license with no serious violations

* Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status

* Understanding that the Safety Director is on-call beyond work hours unless that designation has been delegated to another staff member

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, financial reports, legal documents and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, employees and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

* Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions and percentages

* Ability to maintain a budget using Excel

* Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and concrete variables

* Ability to prepare and manage Safety budget

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS:

Basic knowledge and experience with standard hardware and software applications. Ability to use computer for E-mail, word processing, accounting, databases and presentations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

* Ability to apply knowledge of current best practice in the safety and security field

* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff and the community

* Ability to speak clearly and concisely in verbal communication

* Ability to convey ideas clearly and concisely in written format

* Ability to perform duties with awareness of, and to adhere to, all district requirements and Board of Education policies

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. Some occasional lifting or moving is required which normally would not exceed ten (10) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Some driving is required. Frequent writing is required. Some extended hours and multiple demands from several people are frequently required of the employee.

The noise level in the work environment is usually very quiet. When working in a school environment the noise level may become moderate to loud.

DATE OF SERVICE: July 1, 2018

WORK YEAR: 48 WEEKS-No vacation time may be taken when school is in session.

SALARY: $55,000-$60,000 commensurate with experience

EVALUATION: The Director of Human Resources shall evaluate the Director of School Safety in collaboration with building principals.
